Opera scholars are often better informed about recent historiography, than historians about the state of the art in musicology. This structural advantage notwithstanding, historians occasionally use different archives than their colleagues in music, thus changing our understanding of the production and reception of particular works. Furthermore, changes in the historiographical agenda always take a while to inform the context in which we read musical or operatic works. Taking the example of a new ERC project investigating Imperial Politics of Opera in Habsburg Europe, the introductory talk to this series will explore how historians and opera scholars might benefit from pooling their resources together.
